Involuntary Pediatric Chemotherapy

"Current approaches to combat cancer rely primarily on the use of chemicals and radiation, which are themselves carcinogenic and may promote recurrences and the development of metastatic disease."

[Source: US Patent #5,605,930 Compositions and Methods for Treating & Preventing Pathologics including Cancer filed 3/7/94 Approved 2/25/97 Dr. Divorit Samid; The USA Dept. of HNS page 56]

Today, in a town only minutes away from the my home, a 10 year old girl is being forced to undergo chemotherapy treatment against her will and the wishes of her family.

Even after the local County Probate Judge ruled *TWICE* in favor of the girl's parents, the hospital (Akron Children’s Hospital) continued their relentless attack against the family without any regard to what the girl and her family desired.[*][*]

After a third try, with inexhaustible funds, the hospital eventually had the ruling overturned and a hospital representative is the currently guardian of the young girl.

This story from my own hometown is alarming to say the very least. I mean, I’ve been in that hospital when I was little. My daughter has been in that hospital.

What may be more alarming is that this is not the only story of its kind.

A more notable case spurned the emotional and compelling 2010 documentary Cut, Poison, Burn where a family was forced to administer chemotherapy to their 4 yr old son, Thomas, after objecting to conventional treatment, choosing instead to seek out less invasive, less damaging, and less life threatening approach.
Their son was cancer free at the time of forced administration of chemotherapy.
Thomas Navarro died during the treatments. His death certificate states the cause of death as: Respiratory failure due to chronic toxicity of chemotherapy.

Neglect versus Informed Choice

Most people, myself included, have had first or second-hand experience with cancer.

Whether you’ve watched a mother or friend struggle, or if you happen to be a survivor yourself – then you understand how difficult the battle is.

In my experience, in cancer treatment (especially chemotherapy) a key element is the patient having a positive outlook and attitude on the treatment received. Forcing a chil) against their will to undergo horrendous treatment for several months is questionable and will no doubt impact any treatment’s influence over the disease.

Obviously, there are cases in which parents act irrationally without data/counsel which seriously neglects the health of a child – but these cases are not relevant to that scenario.

Cancer, not that long ago, was a rare disease and now it is a leading cause of death among Americans.

Over the century, we have dramatically altered the way we live and eat which is obviously having a significant effect on our (and our children’s) health.

Today, the majority of members in our society are freely selecting to adopt unhealthy habits. In fact, we are encouraged to do so – each one of us encouraged to let our children learn and live a lifestyle that promotes disease, while at the same time, we are losing the right to select which medical therapies to treat our children’s diseases with.

The majority of chemotherapy drugs used on children and not approved by the FDA for pediatric use and are known to be carcinogenic (meaning it causes cancer).[*][*]

Alternative Treatment

If you have witnessed someone going through chemotherapy, you know it is not a health-promoting treatment. Chemotherapy utilizes a mixture of toxins to eliminate and kill cancer cells (which also does not discriminate against the healthy cells in the body).

Getting the correct diagnosis is critical and conventional medicine excels at this. Another important factor in curing cancer is to know all your options for conventional and alternative treatments.

Chemotherapy is only one of several cancer treatments  - If you are interested in alternative treatments, start here:

It can be said with most certainty that when someone donates their time or money to a pink-ribbon walkathon or cancer charity, they believe that are doing a good thing.

They believe they are funding cancer research that is vital to curing cancer. However, the money donated to these charities perpetuates the status quo of cancer treatment (namely toxic pharmaceuticals and expensive machines).

The National Cancer Institute's annual budget was $5.2 billion (2010).

Alternative treatments that are witnessing real progress against cancer do not receive any money from the government or these charities.

The most promising cancer therapies to emerge in the past three decades from the Burzynski Clinic is all self-funded.

Action

If you find what Akron Children’s Hospital is doing to be deplorable, consider going to their facebook page and making a public statement. You find you are not alone – adding your voice to many others who are speaking up.

Your Rights (or Lack Thereof) Against Mandatory Vaccine Programs

Mandatory flu vaccine policies are touching more lives than ever right now, especially in the healthcare field – here is why and who is speaking up against it (it might surprise you).

New Hospital Policies

New hospital policies on mandatory flu vaccines for its employees is an excellent example of what rights and liberties we really have to say no.

As you may be aware of, the newly enacted Affordable Heathcare Act (aka Obamacare) has been implemented. What you may not be aware of is that the Policy establishes a Hospital Value-Based Purchasing program.[*]

What the heck does that have to do with flu vaccines and HCWs – well, under the Hospital VBP Program, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will reduce payment amounts depending on if performance standards are reached within that hospital.[*][*][*]

What performance standards, exactly?

Beginning JAN 1st (2013), hospitals will be required to submit summary data on influenza vaccination of their healthcare personnel (via the CDC and the National Healthcare Safety Newtork-NHSN).[*]

In summary, hospitals will not get fully reimbursement through government funds unless they meet their performance standards for influenza vaccination set by the government.

….ahhhhh, now it makes sense why hospital’s ‘care’ so much about their patients being protected from catching the flu from their personnel.

No Exemption For You

First off, as you may be aware, there are State laws in place that provide exemptions for some populations. Such as:[*]

-children attending day-care centers
-day-care center employees
-schoolchildren
-college students
-hospital patients
-residents of long-term care facilities

However, the laws protecting average adults such as myself (and you) are lacking.[*]

If the administration at your job decided one day that mandatory vaccination was in the best interest for their bottom line then (unless barring approved medical exemption) you would be required to oblige or face termination.

There is no religious or philosophical exemption option for you – even if you State allows these for populations that are listed above.

You read that right - no constitutional right exists to either religious or philosophic exemptions for the average person.

The liberty secured by the Constitution of the United States to every person within its jurisdiction does not import an absolute right for vaccine exemption. This is considered for the  common good and that an organized society could not exist without “safety to its members”.[*]

But what happens when Policy is carried out without scientific evidence supporting it?

People start to speak up…

The Push Back

I get it, the strategy for this recommendation is based on the argument (rather than actual data) that because of their proximity to patients, HCW mandatory vaccination protects themselves and their patients from influenza (and complications from it).

Unfortunately, the evidence base supporting this mandatory policy is unsound, prejudiced and not supported by existing literature.[*]

There are many policies that are carried out that lack evidence, but when real people are losing everything they’ve worked for because of it then people start getting noisy.

(And if you have not been affected or know someone who has than it is only a matter of time until you do).

Last year in my state of Ohio, which has a mandate that hospital employees be vaccinated, the healthcare company TriHealth fired more than 150 workers for not complying with influenza vaccine mandates.[*]

Such massive terminations from hospitals do not go unnoticed, National Nurses Union (the largest nurses union in the country) began to speak publicly on its opposition to such mandatory policies required of healthcare workers.

“RNs care deeply about health policies regarding the transmission of the influenza virus in  health care settings, but believe that comprehensive employer-sponsored voluntary vaccination programs can be effective only if extensive education is provided on the risks and benefits of vaccination, the vaccines are conveniently accessible to employees.

Mandatory flu vaccination programs engender distrust and resistance among employees; offer a disincentive to providing vaccination education to employees, and raise ethical and legal questions about the personal employment rights of employees.”[*]

The National Nurses Union (NNU) joines the Occupational Safety and Health Agency, as well as other major healthcare unions and organizations, who all say there is insufficient evidence for the federal government to promote mandatory influenza vaccination programs that might result in employment termination.[*]

The co-president for the NNU, Karen Higgins, goes on record to state:

“It is unfortunate that for-profit pharmaceutical companies were consulted in this matter yet the voices of the nation’s direct-care hospital RNs have gone unheard. Nurses are calling for an open process to explore the best way to protect patients and healthcare workers, not one that is driven by corporate profits.”[*]

The Data

Data published just last month (SEPT 2013) from the CDC, illustrates little evidence of protection for patients when a mandatory flu vaccination programs for HCW’s is employed.[*]

In fact, The Cochrane Review analysis found no evidence to support compulsory vaccination of HCW (finding “low or very low levels of evidence”).[*]

Data published in 2009 from a meta-analysis review presents NO evidence that the flu vaccine decreases complications, such as pneumonia, or TRANSMISSION.[*]

This is not only unsettling but outrageous considering hardworking people are losing their jobs and their families are suffering because of this.

Vaccination of healthcare workers to protect vulnerable patients should be viewed as an evidence-based recommendation. Period.

The post is dedicated to my friend, who has requested to be anonymous because she fears that she will be terminated if this post is seen by her employer.

Below is part of the document she recently received from her employer/hospital. She is currently breastfeeding and has a choice to administered an influenza vaccine or be terminated. Medical exemption does not qualify breastfeeding as a contradiction. All medical exemption must be approved by a review process established by hospital leadership.

Your voice is heard.

Common Questions on Vaccine Injury

Despite precautions and testing, some children and adults suffer lifelong medical problems, or have died, as a result of being vaccinated.

In 1986, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) was developed to safeguard vaccine supply (manufacturers) and to compensate those who have developed injuries from vaccination.[*]

So far this year (2013), the amount paid out by the Vaccine Injury Compensation Trust Fund is 224 million dollars.[*]

Because vaccine injuries, disabilities and deaths are real, it is critically important that you take the time needed to gather information and make a confident, educated decision.

Below are some common questions regarding vaccine injury and compensation:

What type of injuries are compensated by the VICP?

To qualify for a claim, the injury must result in at least one out of the four following damages:

-Last for more than six months (post vaccination)

-Resulted in a hospital stay

-Resulted surgery

-Resulted in death

I would suggest checking out this Vaccine Injury Table which lists conditions that are presumed to be caused by vaccines. It also lists time cut-offs which will help determine if the injury is causal.

These conditions are otherwise known as ‘table injuries’ which are known, compensated injuries due to adverse reactions from vaccination.

It is important to note that compensation has been made for many vaccine-related injuries that are not listed on the injury table.

If your injury is not on the Table or if it did not occur within the time period listed, then you are simply required to prove that the vaccine caused the condition. Such proof is based on medical records or opinion, which may include expert witness testimony.

Who files the claim?

If you believe you have a claim, you should file a report (VAERS) and contact a lawyer.  The National Vaccine Information Center maintains a list of attorneys who deal specifically with VICP claims.  You can find their list of attorneys here on the NVIC website.

You do not need to be a doctor or a citizen of the US to file a claim.

Are all vaccines covered by the VICP?

Although most vaccines recommended for children are covered, not all are eligible for compensation.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Depending on the adverse event that took place, the amount of time you have to file a claim changes.

For example, if the vaccine injury results in death – you have 2 years to file a claim.

If you (or your child) is injured in any other way other than death, you have 3 years from the onset of the first symptom.

Click here to read more about the deadlines regarding vaccine-injury claims.

Is autism considered a vaccine-related adverse event?

No and yes.

The official statement provided by Health and Human Services asserts that:

“HHS has never concluded in any case that autism was caused by vaccination”

That’s all fine-and -dandy, however, numerous cases that have been rewarded on the ground of vaccine-induced encephalopathy (brain disease) has associated autism spectrum disorder.

Two compensated examples from this year alone:

10 yr old Ryan Mojabi  was awarded compensation from neuroimmunologically mediated dysfunctions in the form of asthma and ASD[*]

15 month old Emily Moller was awarded compensation on the ground of her injury listed as “encephalopathy characterized by speech delay and probable global developmental delay” (seizure disorder and PDD-NOS, a form of ASD). [*]

More damning to the case against the HHS state is an article published in 2011 from the Pace Environment Law Review (PELR), where it was found that at least 83 cases of vaccine injuries compensated by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) involve acknowledged brain damage that included autism.

In 47% of the cases reviewed (39 out of the 83), there is confirmation of autism or autism spectrum disorder beyond parental report.[*]

The published review illustrates that the VICP has been compensating cases of vaccine-induced brain damage associated with autism for more than twenty years.

How much is awarded and how long will it take?

It takes on average 2-3 years to work through the process.[*]

There is no limitation on the amount of an award in a vaccine-related injury; however, the law does contain certain restrictions. For example, the compensation for vaccine-related death is limited to $250,000.[*]

Awards range from $80,000 to $5.9 million – with the average amount awarded to individuals with an injury at approximately $800,000.00.[*]

Where does the money come from?

Since 1988, when the National Childhood Vaccine injury Act was enacted, a “no-fault” system was created to compensate the individuals that have been harmed by the administration of a vaccine.

The manufacturer does not at any time pay for any injuries caused by their vaccines unless the injured person rejects their awarded claim (money) by the court and decides to sue a manufacturer (I am unaware of any documented case of this happening since 1988).[*]

All money awarded is paid from the Vaccine Injury Compensation Trust Fund which is funded from a tax of $0.75 on every dose of vaccine that is purchased (via
your insurance premiums or direct purchase of vaccines).[*]

The Department of Treasury collects the taxes and manages the Fund’s investments.  Below are some documents you can review to learn more about how the money has been allocated and how much has been spent.

Vaccines carry with them risk of sickness, injury and death. To bring attention to that fact and the growing crisis of the injured, October is designated Vaccine Injury Awareness Month.

How can we help those who have been injured?

One of the ways we can assist these families is by spreading the word that vaccine injuries are real and they are more common than we are led to believe.

If you are on facebook or twitter, please use the image below as your profile image for the month of October. Please spread the word amongst your own networks.

Bring the issue of vaccine injuries out into the public’s eye!

“Your daughter could be one less.”[*]

An advertising campaign slogan seemingly designed to promote fear rather than actual evidence-based decision making about the potential benefits of the HPV vaccine.

When one takes a hard look at the scientific evidence, the more you may consider the sheer lunacy of the vaccine.

A Quick Recap
The What, Who, When and Where

The first HPV vaccine was added to the recommended routine childhood immunization schedule by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2007.[*]

This vaccine is given as a series of three shots over 6 months - two vaccines (Cervarix and Gardasil) are currently approved and available for administration in the US.[*]

Out of 130 different types of HPV, nearly 30 are transmitted via sexual contact, 15 of which are oncogenic (may progress to tumor formation). Gardasil vaccinates against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18.[*]

HPV vaccination is recommended for all girls age 11 to 12, with "catch-up" doses for girls and women from 13 to 26 who haven't been vaccinated (there are no booster recommendation as of yet).[*]

Both vaccines are available for females. Only Gardasil is available for males (recommended ages 11-21).[*][*]

Let Thy Numbers Speak Clearly
Prevalence of Cervical Cancer

“Your daughter could be one less.” [*]

Of this entire post, the information in this section may be the most profound to the reader.

Based on data collected from 2008-2010 from Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (published by the National Cancer Institute), there is a 0.66% chance your daughter will be diagnosed with cancer of the cervix at anytime during her life.[*]

Approximately 0.1% will be diagnosed under the age of 20.[*]

The median age at diagnosis for cancer of the cervix is 49.[*][*]

It is of extreme importance to recognize this point when reviewing this data:

2010 Discovery Medicine Journal
At this time, protection against cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2/3 (CIN 2/3) is 5 years for Gardasil and 8.4 years for Cervarix.[*]

If your daughter receives an HPV vaccine at the recommended age of 11, protection will have waned by age 16.

The data collected from the above agency confirms approximately 0.0% deaths from cervical cancer under age 20.[*]

What is "one less" then 0%?

Pap Smears
The Saving Grace Against Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, in the past 40 years the number of cases and deaths of cervical cancer have decreased significantly (as review in the previous section).[*][*]

This decline is attributed to regular Papanicolaou (Pap) tests, which has the ability to identify cervical precancerious cells before it turns into cancer.[*]

According to published data (2010 Discovery Medicine Journal), HPV vaccine efficacy must last at least 15 years to contribute to the prevention of cervical cancers. At the current time, protection against is at best 5-8 years.[*]

It is critical that parents and young women are given a full explanation of the importance of continued cervical screening and the real efficacy of the vaccine against cancer prior to administration.

Protection from Cancer
Real or Imaginary

The published data from clinical trials for both Gardasil and Cervarix appears to indicate 100% effectiveness against HPV-16 and HPV-18.[*][*]

That's pretty damn amazing.

However, you must understand that the conclusions of the HPV trials are based on clinical data extrapolated from a set of surrogate markers.

Now, this isn’t anything novel. Since disease progression is slow in the case of cervical cancer (20-40 years), it is more practical to use certain surrogate endpoints to measure a clinically meaningful outcome which will shorten the time required to complete the clinical trial.

However, these surrogate markers must be carefully assessed to maintain that they accurately measure what they are theoretically measuring  - this is the essential piece in determining whether or not any meaningful clinical benefits can be expected from the HPV vaccine.[*]

The surrogate marker used in the clinical data to measure cervical cancer reduction was a reduction in cervical dysplasia (CIN1-3).

The money question:

A reduction in cervical dysplasia  =  HPV vaccine ability to reduce cervical cancer?

Cervical dysplasia refers is abnormal changes in the cells on the surface of the cervix that are seen underneath a microscope and are understood to hold the potential in progressing into cervical cancer (most often seen in women ages 25 – 35).[*][*]

Dysplasia is grouped into three progression categories:[*]

•CIN I -- mild dysplasia
•CIN II -- moderate to marked dysplasia
•CIN III -- severe dysplasia to carcinoma in situ

To answer our question, we will have to understand the progression and regression of HPV infection and Dyplasia.

HPV infection is common, occuring in 1 out of 5 women. 90% of HPV cases will resolve within 1-3 year without any intervention, less than 8% of HPV cases will screen positive for cervical dysplasia (CIN I – III).[*][*]

Of those women who do test positive for CIN I, a review of literature from 1950-1992 illustrates a 1% progression rate to invasive cancer due to the high frequency of natural regression in CIN I and CIN II. [*][*]

It is insurmountably clear that the surrogate markers used in the clinical data are insufficient in determining the true long term benefit of a prophalytic vaccine against cancer caused by HPV infection due to the benign nature and high frequency of regression of cervical dysplasia. [*][*]

In the natural course of cervical cancer, only a very small fraction of CIN I lesions will progress to CIN II and, from there, only a small fraction of CIN III will eventually progress to cervical cancer.

The incidence of HPV infection and the incidence of cervical cancer should not be considered equal since cervical cancer will not develop in most women who are infected even with high-risk HPV infections. [*]

The HPV vaccine to-date has not prevented a single case of cervical cancer, let alone cervical cancer death. Nor has the HPV vaccine improved the diagnosis of cervical cancer. [*]

"One less" of what? Clearly, not cervical cancer.

Safety
Is it Worth the Risk?

"Your daughter could be one more"

You may find yourself asking if it is even appropriate to risk any adverse effects to a  preadolescent girl for a vaccine that is (1) only theoretically proven to prevent a disease that (2) she only has a 0.66% risk of developing over her lifetime – WHEN THE SAME CAN BE PREVENTED WITH REGULAR PAP SCREENING. [*][*][*]

Safety concern 1 - Exacerbate cervical disease
One poignant aspect to address regarding safety is the potential in the HPV vaccine to actually enhance cervical disease.[*][*]

If a young lady is sexually active prior to receiving Gardasil or Ceravix, it is possible that she may already be infected with the HPV. This is alarming due to rate of enhancement in cervical disease in the trial data.

Gardasil’s pre-licensure data observed an efficacy of -33 to -44.6% in women who were already exposed to HPVs targeted by the vaccine. [*][*]

An in a recent publication (2012 AJOG), high-risk HPV infection was diagnosed more frequently in vaccinated women than unvaccinated women (6.2% versus 2.6%).[*]

Safety concern 2 - VAERS
Another point worth addressing regarding safety is the adverse events reported after vaccination to various governments worldwide.

Wait, now - I fully recognize that a passive vaccine surveillance system does not prove causation between vaccine administration and an adverse reaction – However, since 2006, nearly 65% of all deaths and life-threatening reactions reported to VAERS from Gardasil or Cervarix alone. [*][*]

A total of 30,020 reports have been received by US VAERS including 2,574 hospitalizations, 9,114 ER visits 93 deaths.[*][*]

82% of cases resulting in permanent disability in females under 30 years of age was attributed to HPV vaccines. [*]

According to the FDA, thromboembolic events (blood clotting) are reported in a higher frequency from Gardasil then with other vaccines. Girls who are using oral contraceptives are at an increased risk, as well as those who are overweight and smoke.[*]

Other events included in HPV labeling: :  local injection site reactions, syncope, dizziness, nausea, headaches, hypersensitivity reactions (such as rashes, hives, & itching), anaphylaxis, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), transverse myelitis, motor neuron disease, pancreatitis, autoimmune disorders, and death. [*][*][*][*]

In contrast with the HPV vaccine, a pap test which uses a speculum to obtain cells from the cervix does not carry a risk of death, autoimmune complications or neurological dysfunction. And to the best of my knowledge, the procedure (LEEP) used to remove high-grade CIN II and CIN III lesions do not carry these risks either.

Safety concern 3 - AAHS Placebo Group

Currently, there are no regulations governing placebo composition, even though data gathered from placebo groups greatly influence trial safety outcomes, conclusions and policy recommendations for public use. [*]

The pre-licensure safety evaluation of Cervarix did not provide a saline solution control group to compare adverse outcomes.[*]

However, promisingly, the pre-licensure safety evaluation of Gardasil gathered data from 2 placebo groups: a saline solution group and an amorphous aluminum hydroxyphospate sulfate (AAHS) group. [*]

The aluminum-containing placebo group provided data on injection-site adverse reactions which resulted in 2-5 more ADRs then the saline placebo.[*]

However, in spite of the data gathered from injection-site ADRs, the manufacturer (Merck) pooled the results from the study participants who received the saline solution and the aluminum containing placebo to present as one ‘control’ group for systematic autoimmune disorders and serious reactions. [*]

The data reported in the package insert resulted in Gardasil having nearly the exact same rate of serious reactions as the “control” group (data of aluminum + saline combined). [*]

Clinical data that is inadequately designed cannot be used in a reliable manner to evaluate the safety of any drug.

The safety outcomes published for HPV vaccines with the use of an AAHS control group (versus a saline solution) produces false negative data and any meaningful conclusion becomes absent. [*]

The inadequate design of safety data is a reflection of the authority and influence the pharmaceutical industry maintains over the evaluation of its own products and publication its data. [*]

The Push for School Entry Mandate
Manufacturers influence on Policy

It may be appealing to consider that governmental policies involving vaccines are protected by the influence of private pharmaceutical manufacturers; however, there is a symbiotic relationship between the two.

However, this marriage is not inherently corrupt. Pharmaceutical companies provide informational resources and potential policy strategies to legislators and health department officials for many medical products, not just vaccines.

Nevertheless, the role that Merck & Co Inc played in legislation following the FDA 2006 approval of Gardasil seriously lacked appropriateness in vaccine policy.

The vaccine manufacturer aggressively engaged in direct lobbying, drafting specific legislation, presenting unrestricted grants - in most states, focusing on school mandates.  One specific instance, Merck financially contributed to a national nonprofit group Women in Government (WIG) which pioneered a “legislative toolkit” containing model school-entry mandate legislation.[*]

The culmination of Merck’s direct lobbying was witnessed in Texas after Governor Perry issued an executive order mandating HPV vaccination for eligible preadolescent girls. The vaccine manufacturer quickly abandon engaging the issue once the public became aware of its role in contributed funds to the governor’s re-election campaign and that his chief-of-staff had worked for years as a lobbyist for Merck.[*]

It is best to acknowledge that vaccine manufacturer’s hold a unique place in policymaking. Government employees and legislators must be ever vigilant to identify that information presented may not be the same as a disinterested party – one that holds interest in selling a pharmaceutical product and securing a population that requires it.

Common Sense and HPV Vaccination
Conclusion

Parents making decisions about HPV vaccination on behalf of their young daughters must be fully informed of the real benefits against cancer when adding HPV vaccination to ongoing screening programs.[*]

To date, there is no data confirming HPV vaccines preventing or treating any cervical cancers. The large majority of HPV infection (and a great proportion of Cervical dysplasia) clear spontaneously without medical intervention, what indicates the surrogate markers in pre-licensure trials were an unreliable indicator of the number of cervical cancer cases that have been/will be prevented by the vaccine.

When reviewing the information on the HPV vaccine, I struggled to understand how parents (and girls old enough to consent themselves) are able to make a fully informed decision on whether to consent to Gardasil/Ceravix if critical information on safety and efficacy is not being presented to them.

I hope the information presented here facilitates a growing curiosity regarding HPV vaccination.

Additional Information

Pap Test Recommendations[*]

New guidelines (released Dec 2012) from The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) state that most women  need a Pap test every 3 to 5 years, rather than annually. However, if a woman is sexually active, they still recommend a yearly screening.
Scientists now know how HPV is transmitted, how few infected women develop cancer, and how slowly cancer develops. Because of the improved method of testing and collecting, new research and technology, the researchers are confident that getting regular, but less frequent, Pap tests is a safe option for women.

New Pap smear guidelines

• Pap smear tests should begin when a woman turns 21
• Women ages 21-29 should get screened every three years.
• Women age 30 and up can be screened every three years.
• After age 65 or 70, most women don't need a Pap smear test.

(Women who have certain risk factors and health issues, regardless of age, may need more frequent screening. This includes women who have HIV/AIDS, are immunosuppressed, were exposed to diethylstilbestrol (DES), or have been treated for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical cancer.)

The value women place in HPV vaccines in conjunction with continued pap smear exams will be viewed differently by different women. Physicians' ethical duties are to provide full explanation of the risks and benefits of adding HPV vaccination to the ongoing screening programs, and to support women in their personal choice for cervical cancer prevention.[*]
